A Bíblia Românica da Biblioteca da Ajuda: o manuscrito e seu percurso

Resumo
Neste seminário aberto Xavier van Binnebeke dará a conhecer uma majestosa Bíblia românica (inícios do séc. XII) que tem, de certa forma, escapado à atenção dos investigadores. Os dois volumes da obra, preservados na Biblioteca da Ajuda em Lisboa, estão, com efeito, entre os mais antigos manuscritos iluminados existentes em Portugal. Graças a várias inscrições medievais foi possível identificar a sua proveniência. Para mais, a história subsequente deste manuscrito pôde ser detalhadamente reconstruída em função de diversos ex-libris, de fontes impressas do século XVIII, e de vários documentos arquivísticos de Lisboa e de Évora.

Xavier van Binnebeke discutirá ainda a escrita e a iluminura e problematizará o enquadramento deste códice na produção geral de bíblias românicas.

Abstract:

In the present lecture Xavier van Binnebeke will introduce the public to an imposing Romanesque Bible set that has hitherto escaped the attention of manuscript researchers. The two volumes, kept in the Biblioteca da Ajuda in Lisbon, are among the oldest illuminated manuscripts preserved in Portugal. Thanks to the identification of a series of mediaeval inscriptions the early provenance of the Bible can be securely pointed out. In addition, the later history of this exceptional set can be reconstructed in detail on the basis of several ex-libris, of early XVIII th century printed sources, and of archival documents in Lisbon and Évora.

The speaker will, moreover, discuss the script and the illumination, and seek to position the volumes within the development of Romanesque Bible production.
